On August 4, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on the sidelines of the series of foreign ministers' meetings on East Asia Cooperation in Phnom Penh.

The two sides expressed satisfaction with the sound strategic communication and close interaction between China and Singapore at various levels, and said that the two countries will continue to maintain high-level exchanges, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, resume flights in an orderly manner and facilitate personnel exchanges.

The two sides had in-depth communication on the Taiwan question. Wang Yi comprehensively elaborated on the historical ins and outs and the real status quo of the Taiwan question, and stressed that the responsibility for the current tension across the Taiwan Strait lies entirely with the US side and that China's response is reasonable and justified. The farce staged by the US under the guise of the so-called "democracy" will in no way affect China's pace of advancing the great cause of reunification, and the noose around the neck of the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence" will only get tighter and tighter. The Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. On this question of core interests, China has no room for compromise and concession. Given the current situation in the Taiwan Strait, it is tantamount to helping a villain do evil if one cannot distinguish right from wrong and advocates appeasement. Conniving at the violation of the one-China principle and undermining the principle of non-interference in others’ internal affairs, which is a basic norm governing international relations, will ultimately harm the security and long-term interests of all countries and jeopardize regional peace and stability. Most countries in the world have clearly voiced their righteous position of adhering to the one-China principle. All countries should be keenly aware of and highly alert to the seriousness and danger of Pelosi's visit, act resolutely to stop such lawless unilateral bullying, never allow the world to be ruled again by the law of the jungle, and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice.

Vivian noted that the one-China policy is a consistent and clear position of Singapore and there will not be any deviation from it. The Singaporean side is always clearly opposed to "Taiwan independence" and hopes that miscalculation and accidents can be avoided and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait maintained.
